“A young Lancaster crew arrive at the aircraft in the preparation for an operation sortie over Germany. Each crew member was required to complete a tour of 30 operations which, statistically during the winter of 1943/44, they had only a one-in-six chance of surviving. Despite these odds, the airmen of RAF Bomber Command, all volunteers, pressed on with their thankless task night after night, in the belief and hope that they were doing their bit to help shorten the war. Over 55,000 of them died as a result.”
