“Mosquitos of 487 (NZ) Squadron led by Wing Commander ‘Black’ Smith DFC drop the first bombs during the famous raid on Amiens prison, 18th February 1944. In the distance to the left are the two remaining aircraft of the second section who will attack from the north. Visible on the right of the picture are the six 464 (Australian) Squadron Mosquitos of the second wave led by Wing Commander Bob Iredale DFC. They are orbiting to avoid being over the target when the 11 second delayed-action bombs of the first wave detonate. Flying alongside the Mosquitos are Typhoons of 174 Squadron acting as close escort fighters.”
