Halifax (serial NP755) was delivered to No. 432 Squadron on 15 August 44. The aircraft completed 28 operations until it was severely damaged while landing on 18 November 44 (pilot F/O A. Clarke). Nineteen of these operations were flown by the crew of F/O W. Saye who originated the name and nose art. The 30th operation was flown by W/C J. MacDonald to Duisburg. Following this operation the artist painted operational wings (a “tour” for a crew was thirty operations) plus a large red heart with a single wing.
Avenging Angel finished the war with 70 operations, the last to Wangerooge on 25 May 1945.
