The school was established at McCall Field by the Royal Air Force and opened on October 22, 1941. Auxiliary facilities were constructed at Shepard. The school was eventually taken over by the RCAF. The school closed on March 10, 1944 and the airfield reverted to a civilian airport in 1949, using the original RCAF buildings.

The old aerodrome site is now occupied by Calgary International Airport. The Calgary Aerospace Museum occupies a former BCATP building.

The school was operated by the Royal Canadian Air Force and opened on September 16, 1940. The RCAF took over the campus of what is now the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology which at that time also housed the Alberta Normal School that trained teachers. #2 eventually became one of the largest wireless training schools in the Commonwealth, graduating thousands of radio operators. The school also utilized the RCAF facilities at Shepard for air training. #2 Wireless School closed on April 14, 1945.

At the end of the war the Normal School and other technical training programs returned to the campus.

RCAF Station Lincoln Park was established adjacent to Currie Barracks in 1935 where an unpaved landing strip was built for their use. By 1939 it was being used by the RCAF's #1 (Fighter) Squadron and No. 3 (Bomber) Squadron. On October 28, 1940, a portion of Currie Barracks began operating as a separate base and became #3 Service Flying Training School. Auxiliary landing fields were constructed near Airdrie and Inverlake. #3 SFTS closed on September 28, 1945.

The old aerodrome site is now part of southwest Calgary and largely occupied by the Lincoln Park Campus of Mount Royal College.
